A 64-hectare fortress by the mouth of the Pasig River, the walled city of Intramuros was built in 1571 and has endured a lot. It was once attacked by Chinese pirates and the Dutch forces, then held at various times by the British, Americans, and Japanese, only to be destroyed by the Battle of Manila on the closing days of World War II.
There are still many traces of its life as the elite preserve of the Spanish ruling classes, from the baluartes (bastions) and puertas (gates) with drawbridges to the impressive government buildings, schools, hospitals monasteries, churches, stately homes, convents, and cobbled plazas.
Walking tours are available, but you can also explore it yourself. Get a map from Intramuros Visitors Center and just start walking.
