Essential Information

This is a touching memorial honoring over 100,000 civilians who were caught in the crossfire of the Battle of Manila, considered of the most atrocious episodes in Asian history. The sculpture is located in Plazuela de Sta. Isabel and is surrounded by sampaloc (tamarind) trees. Don't miss the before-and-after images of the city to see just how many government buildings, universities, churches, convents, and monasteries were ruined by the month-long battle inflicted on the city by the Americans and the Japanese. The destruction was said to be worse than what the German Luftwaffe did to London, and the death toll was comparable to that of the Hiroshima bombing.
