Essential Information

A mausoleum containing national hero Jose Rizal's mortal remains, the Rizal Monument is guarded by marines in full regalia and is regarded as a symbol of Philippine nationhood. It was once called motto stella (meaning 'guiding star')-a name that never caught on. The martyr's bronze sculpture is one of the most popular icons of Manila, appearing on everything from money to souvenir shirts.
