How many days should I devote to Vientiane?

How long do you think I should stay in Vientiane before moving on to Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng? I understand it's the capital city but I'm not sure that there's a lot to do there. Is an overnight stay enough, or should I plan at least 3 days? - Vermont Native - Guest

how many days vientiane
Smallish, but charming—that is Vientiane. The city is well worth a couple of days of sightseeing, dining, shopping, and discovery, longer even, if you let the city grow on you. Vientiane is more relaxed and it has a charming small town atmosphere, far from the chaotic nature of other Southeast Asian capitals.

A 3-day tour would be enough for you to explore some of the most attractive temples and monuments in the city, wander around the riverside, explore the lively Lane Xang, and visit other exciting tourist spots often neglected by travelers. Vientiane may be the perfect transit point for visiting other places in the country, but the city too, has some unique draw cards that are well worth a photo stop and a little exploration and attention.

Some recommendations include the Lao National Museum, Wat Si Saket (Sisaket Museum), Black Stupa, Pha That Luang (the country's national symbol), the Buddha Park, and the National Ethnic Cultural Park. The Buddha Park and National Ethnic Cultural Park are a little out of the way, but they may be worth your while if you are into bizarre concrete sculptures and ethnic displays.
