Any bad experiences in Manila

Share them here. I would appreciate tips from tourists who have been there. I will be staying for a week in July. - Kimberly - Guest

bad experiences Manila
I personally haven't had any bad experiences in Manila, not as extreme as other tourists and some traveler friends have had, anyway. Worst for me are taxi rip-offs. I've had the bad fortune of getting into a cab that has seen better days (old, musty, hot!). Even worse than the smelly, sweaty, and uncomfortable ride, the driver insisted on raising my fare almost twice than the meter reading, saying that his equipment is not working properly and that trips from where I got picked up, all the way to my destination usually cost more. I didn't bother arguing and just gave him what he was asking for to avoid making a scene.

Careful hailing a cab, especially when you haven't yet mastered blending in with the crowd. Tourists have huge target rings on their foreheads for all kinds of traps. Other minor nuances to watch out for are constant hoard of street children tugging at your shirt for some spare change, insect bites at night, and streets littered by trash (and *too many* people). Just be smart in choosing which taxi to flag, bring a trusty insect repellent, and ignore the nuances and you'll enjoy Manila as much as you can!

I haven't had any bad experiences in Manila, but some of my friends experienced a few, like when riding public transportation like the jeepney, the MRT, and the bus. Pickpockets are very common especially when it's crowded, so it pays to be vigilant. Keep your bag and belongings close to you at all times. Hug them if you can, make sure the zipper or any openings are inaccessible to people beside you, and if you are carrying a backpack, place it in front of you. It may look silly but at least you can make an effort to safeguard your belongings.
