Does it flood in Manila?

We are going to Manila for 5 days in February and are worried about flooding, which I've heard about. I need to know what the flood-free areas are so we can choose a hotel in that area. - Hilda D. - Guest

A lot of flooding does occur in Manila, but not until the rainy season, which usually starts mid-May through October. February is a safe month to travel since there are no torrential rains to worry about. It is also one of the coolest months in the country's weather calendar, so you get to escape the scorching summer heat come mid- to late March.

Should your travel date be pushed to unfortunate rainy months (June through October), best steer clear of areas like Pasig and Marikina City, Central Manila, and Malabon, which are prone to extreme flooding. Quezon City and Makati are not entirely flood-free, but they are your best options if you wish to stay in the Metro during flood-prone seasons.

However, if you truly want to see the beauty of the country and not be hassled by flooding and gloomy skies, choose travel dates within the pre-summer and summer months. December through April is a good window, plus you get to join in the holiday festivities.
