Is it easy to rent a car in Manila?

My girlfriend and I are going to Manila for a teaching conference and will be staying for almost a month. We are planning to rent a car while there. How much would it cost? Would they honor my driver's license or do I need to apply for special papers? I am from the US. Thanks! - Vonnegut – Guest

It is very easy to rent a car in Manila. Many world-renowned rental companies operate in the metro (particularly in premier cities like Makati and Manila), including AVIS, while local operators also exist. You will find self-drive and chauffeur driven services, as well as long-term car leasing, if you are staying longer. Most contracts can be tailored to your needs and budget.

Rental rates vary widely depending on the company, but some can go as low as 999 PHP (about 23 USD) per day. More flexible arrangements can be made if you want to save some money, where you can get weekly deals instead of paying a daily rate.

Foreign drivers are most welcome in the Philippines. You may use your US driver's license for up to 90 days without hassle. Anything longer than that, you will have to be issued a special permit to continue driving.

A little head's up on heavy traffic especially during rush hours and rainy seasons. Other than that, you can easily learn to navigate Manila roads. Happy driving!
