What Southeast Asian countries are best to combine in a backpacking trip?

Hello, AsiaHopping! I am planning a backpacking trip to Southeast Asia and would like some help in figuring out what countries to combine. I have a month, and ideally I want to spend at least 5 days in each place that I will visit. I want to go to at least 3 countries to get stamps on my passport! The places have to be connected by cheap transport, like trains or buses or ferries, or really cheap flights. Thanks! - Gringo - Guest

Southeast Asia is one of the most amusing places you will ever set foot on in your lifetime. The diverse culture, stunning ruins and ancient cities, exotic beaches, nature, and the vibrant smiles of some of the friendliest people, keep travelers wanting more out of this side of the planet. There are numerous backpacking routes you can take all across the region, the most popular of which pass through the beautiful countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos.

A typical backpacking tour of these Asian beauties involves a visit to their capital cities, namely, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Vientiane, and Hanoi, with a few side trips to the heavenly beaches of Thailand (think Phuket and Samui) as well as stunning hidden treasures like Vietnam's limestone-studded Ha Long Bay and Laos' hilly Vang Vieng.

These countries are well connected by railways and waterways, plus airfares are relatively cheap. You may even incorporate other popular destinations in neighboring countries, for cheap, like Burma's Yangon City, and Indonesia's Yogyakarta.
