What is the best authentic restaurant in Singapore?

I don't want westernized Singaporean food. I'm talking about down-home Singaporean cooking. I don't care much for ambiance. Suggestions? - Mama - Guest

Best authentic restaurant Singapore
Looking for good eats in the little red dot? Singapore is known for its insanely delicious fare, and local favorites are surprisingly cheap. Some absolutely must-try dishes include the flavorful (and high-fat) Char Kway Teow, Wantan Mee, and Chili Crab, along with the ubiquitous Chicken Rice (Singapore's unofficial national dish).

If you don't want to endure the perpetual lines at the famed Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice for your mandatory Chicken Rice stop, dine instead at Boon Tong Kee, which has several outlets across the island, including Balestier Road and River Valley Road.

For the best Char Kway Teow and other stir-fried goodness, try Hill Street Fried Kway Teow at Bedok South Road. But if your taste buds are craving for some chili tomato gravy-bathed crabs, visit Roland Restaurant, which is said to be the originator of the famed Chili Crab dish.

If you want to experience all forms of good Singaporean cooking, Maxwell Road Hawker Center is lined by popular local joints to try.
