Perhaps the biggest issue you will face when visiting Thailand is being seen as a big 'target' and opportunity to make money. Beware of peddlers and scammers who know exactly where unsuspecting tourists hang. You would do well to just ignore overeager and overly friendly strangers who would chat you up and give unsolicited tour and shopping advice. However, this shouldn't discourage you from talking up the locals—just be careful who you get chummy with.

Taxi scams are about the most common theme of horror stories we keep on hearing from tourists here at Asia Hopping. Our advice, beware of shady taxi and tuk tuk drivers who would tell you that the hotel or restaurant you want to visit has been closed or has burned down. It is more than possible that they are saying this to take you to another place where a good commission is waiting for them.

Some don'ts when visiting Thailand: Don't drink too much (even if your hotel is only steps away); Don't buy gems (not from less-than-reputable sellers); Don't get in a fight with locals; Don't expect cops to be knights in shining armor; and Stay away from drugs. Most troubles here can easily be avoided if you just keep your nose clean.
