Is Bangkok safe for tourists?

I am old (if you can call 55 old) and it will be my first time in Asia. I'm just using up my miles. I have enough to go to Bangkok. It seems to be pretty touristy and safe, but I have heard about some scams and whatnot. How safe is Bangkok, really? - Jesse V. - Guest

Bangkok is a very safe city for tourists and violence against foreign visitors is very rare. Tourist traps, however, are so prevalent that Bangkok has become synonymous to gem scams and cons. The city is indeed very touristy and generally safe, even for older tourists (55 isn't that old). Asians, including Thais have great respect for the elderly, so you won't have trouble getting along with the locals. Bangkok is a good place to start your Asian discovery in. Just read up on scams and cons that you might encounter and practice extra care when touring.
