Is Bangkok safe for women travelers?

I will be alone and I am wondering if it's safe to walk around by myself, go shopping in the street markets, try street food in Bangkok, etc. I will appreciate input from women who have been there. If you have suggestions about the safest Bangkok hotels for women, please post them, too. - Yoyo - Guest

Thailand (and Bangkok) is probably one of the safest countries (and cities) you can travel in all by yourself. Sure, you may get the occasional rip-off cab driver or the overcharging tuk tuk operator, but other than that, you will have no trouble getting along with everyone else, especially in Bangkok.

General precautions apply when walking around by yourself in the Silom area and its street markets. Dress to blend in and not to impress if you don't want to attract petty thieves and at the same time, get the best bargains from vendors. Bang Rak Market is only one of the many interesting street markets to visit in the area, best known for its colorful blooms sold at wholesale prices, cheap clothing stalls and good supply for fruit, seafood and meat stalls. Lalai Sap Market has a nice food market, but the best market experience can be had at Patpong Night Market, which is by far the most visited and most touristy market in Bangkok.
