Is Bangkok walkable?

I've read stories about tuktuk and taxi scams in Bangkok, so would rather walk when possible. I'll be staying in Pratunam for 3 days. Is Bangkok a walkable city? Are the sidewalks wide and safe? I'm not particularly fit but I have no problems walking 10 kilometers a day or more. Thanks. - Candy - Guest

Pratunam is one of the best places to stay in the city. It is one of the most famous shopping districts in Bangkok, and as such is very well connected to everything else. Centrally located, the district is well covered by the Skytrain as well as the Airport Rail Link. You may even reach the area by boat from Khao San Road, or by bus from elsewhere in the city.

Pratunam is also unexpectedly easy to reach on foot, as it is located only 500 meters away from the Ratchaprasong intersection, close to Siam Square. On the way, you will pass by some luxurious malls and hotels so you can easily forget about the distance, if you insist on avoiding overpriced cab rides.

The night market can be tempting, so is the thriving jazz scene, but to be safe, avoid dodgy alleys and don't stay out too late on the streets! Better conserve that energy for more walking tours of the city the next day!
