Is Hanoi walkable?

So how big exactly is Hanoi, and can we get around without ever having to ride a taxi? I read about Hanoi taxi scams I would really rather walk. Suggestions appreciated. - NorthFace - Guest

hanoi walkable
Hanoi is the second largest city in Vietnam, spanning about 3,345 sq. km. Certain areas like the city center and the old district are pretty walkable, but distances between other attractions and sightseeing destinations require short to long road travel. Taxis are still the best means to travel long distances, but if you don't want to fall prey to scheming drivers, you can always go for cheaper options like bus and cyclo services (for shorter distances).

If you want to get the most out of your trip, we suggest getting day tour or walking tour services, which will take you to the most interesting stops and sightseeing destinations in town. BE prepared to pay somewhere between $35 to $40 per person for a guided walking tour around popular sites like the ancient city, Hoan Kiem Lake, some temples, and other historical places.

Walking around the city is an enjoyable feat, just beware of speeding cyclos and vehicles. Hanoi also has some of the best street food in the world, so you won't have to worry about getting your much needed energy boost while exploring town on foot.
