Hotels under $50 in Singapore

Who says you have to spend a lot to get the best of Singapore? Sure, the affluent city state is one of the world's most expensive, but you can still cut costs to make your trip lighter on the pocket. If high price of accommodation is the only thing holding you back from exploring the Lion City, then you need to see this list of budget hotels. We're proving that you don't have to spend more than $50 a night (that's under £30 if you're English) to stay in a decent hotel that puts you close to everything that Singapore has to offer:

Asia Hopping Score: 6.03 out of 10

Strategically located for tours, business, and leisure trips, Hotel 81 lucky is very close to all that the city has to offer, from business centres to popular tourist spots like Geylang Seria New Market and Hajo Lane. The Malay Heritage Centre is also close by, as well as the Singapore National Stadium. The hotel features tour and ticket assistance and is only 20 minutes away from Changi Airport.

Price per night: A budget traveler's delight, this hotel will only cost you $47 (£28) per night.

What tourists say: Tourists love this cheap and clean hotel for its location, comfort, and quick access to transport and cheap eats. The Wi-Fi is unreliable, though, and some parts of the hotel could use a facelift.

Backpackers Inn Chinatown Hotel outside the hotel

Asia Hopping Score: 6.85 out of 10

Ideal for solo travelers and even groups on a budget, Backpacker's Inn in Singapore's Chinatown is only 5 minutes by foot from the Chinatown MRT and 10 minutes from the best nightlife and dining in Clarke Quay. Sentosa Island and the famed Orchard road are 15 minutes by train. The hotel is designed specifically for backpackers, featuring shared bathroom toilets, a kitchenette, and washing machines.

Price per night: By far the cheapest rates we've spotted, a night's stay at Backpacker's dormitories will only cost you $18 to $21 (£11 to £13) -- at least five times less than what you would pay in a mid-range Singapore hotel. A private bedroom costs a bit more at $55 (£33) but is still a good deal if you want more privacy.

What tourists say: This hotel is quite popular with backpackers and budget travelers who only have positive things to say about its location, cleanliness, and service. Their only complaint: the common washroom (but at this price point, you have to expect that).
